Nokia C2-01 Review

It’s no secret that Nokia have been struggling to compete in the smart phone market for a number of years, so it’s probably not surprise that the company has decided to try and dominate the lower end of the market. What a lot of tech bloggers and enthusiasts seem to forget is that there are millions of people who only want a simple handset that makes it easy to make calls, send texts and perhaps occasionally check email. The Nokia C2-01 is built to cater to these people, but that doesn’t mean it’s a basic phone in the same way that the old Nokia 3310 used to be.

Let’s begin by looking at what you don’t get with the Nokia C2-01. If you’re used to a smartphone, then features such as video calls, wifi, touch screen and an accelerometer are all missing. The phone does, however, come with features such as 3G connectivity, a headphone socket and a wall charger, along with a mini-USB connection for transferring data as well as charging the phone via the computer. The phone also comes with a media player, so you’ll be able to play some videos and view pictures on the handset.

It is a relatively small phone, weighing just 89g. IT can easily fit in your pocket though as it’s designed to be compact. When you see the phone compared to some of the bigger models on the market (notably the Samsung Galaxy Note) it’s amazing that anyone can use the bigger smart phones on a day to day basis! Of course, this also means that it has a much smaller screen – 2 inches with a 320×240 pixel resolution – but for basic operations this is all you really need.

The great thing about Nokia C2-01 12 month contracts is that they are very cheap compared to the prices you get for a smart phone. Despite the cheap price, the Nokia C2-01 still has features such as 3G connectivity and memory that can be expanded, while also doing the basics very well. If you want a high quality phone that can record 1080 video, play 3D games and watch HD video on then the Nokia C2-01 isn’t up to the job. If you want a simple phone that does the basics well then the CS-01 is definitely one to consider.

There are some problems and downsides to the Nokia C2-01 however. The video camera is very poor, although still images are slightly better with the 3.2MP camera. The inbuilt memory is relatively small, but you can expand it up to 16GB should you need more space for photos and texts.

Surprisingly, the phone does allow you to download some applications, and also comes preloaded with some (including Facebook). Obviously the app store doesn’t have anyone near the same choice as the Apple App Store or Android Market, but it’s a nice extra touch that you wouldn’t expect from a budget phone.

In summary, the Nokia C2-01 handset isn’t going to win any awards for innovation, but it provides a great deal of value for money. Don’t be put off by the early 2000′s appearance – the phone still has a number of useful features beyond basic texting and phone calls.

Let’s start with the basics. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus handset is a top of the range option at the moment, with features such as a large 4.65″ screen – running with a 720×1280 resolution, and a 1.2GHz dual core processor. As mentioned earlier, it also comes with the capability to record video in 1080p. The Super AMOLED screen gives the phone fantastic clarity and makes it a joy to use. It has been receiving very good reviews from many tech sites around the internet.

This is where Android 4.0 really comes into its own, because it makes the phone very responsive to run and gets rid of a lot of the little bugs that made previous versions of the operating system occasionally frustrating to use. Whether you want to send an email, check Facebook or any other operation the phone is snappy and there is barely any lag between your input and the phone actually executing what you’ve asked it.

The iPhone 4S feels a lot stronger and better built than the Nexus, for example, as the Nexus is made largely of plastic. This gives it a slightly “cheap” feel compared to other phones, but it is a small complaint. Samsung are known for using plastic on their phones compared to companies like Apple who have recently been using metal.

As one of the main selling points of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the operating system it seemed only fair to spend a few paragraphs explaining exactly what’s new. Ice Cream Sandwich, which is the strange name for Android 4.0, has a number of improvements compared with previous iterations of the operating system. A small example is that you can now preview widgets before placing them on the home screen – it is also possible to scroll within widgets so you don’t need to open up the application in order to see the information that you need.

An interesting feature of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 is that the buttons at the bottom of the device are no longer physical. Instead they are on the screen and only come on when the phone is in use. Also, instead of having separate buttons for Home, Menu, Back and Search, there are now only two buttons – Home and Back. Other new features include a scrolling menu and action bars on applications developed by Google. These show options that you could usually only access by going into the menu, making these applications a lot easier to use. The overall goal of Android 4.0 was to take everything good about Android, streamline it and make it faster. In most cases Google has achieved its goals, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus benefits from this.

Something that has been written a lot about is the face detection feature on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The idea is that the phone recognises your face and unlocks automatically. While this is an interesting feature, it has its problems and can also be fooled by the use of images, so probably isn’t safe to use as a security feature.

Away from the latest version of Android, the second biggest selling point of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 12 month deal is the screen. It is astonishingly good, and you’ll definitely remember the first time you turn it on and see what it can do. With its large number of pixels, Super AMOLED technology and bright colours, it is one of the best screens on the market (although probably not quite as good as the Galaxy SII).

Other features include a 1.2GHz processor (dual core), 16GB of internal flash and a high quality camera. The phone, however, doesn’t come with a MicroSD slot, meaning that you can’t add more memory when you need it. There is rumoured to be a 32GB version of the phone in the works but we’ll have to wait and see how much that costs when/if it’s released.

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a major competitor for the number one smart phone on the market at the moment. Along with the Apple iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy SII it is the number one choice. As with any new phone, it is likely to be quickly bettered by newer models (notably the Samsung S3 when it’s released) but for now it’s definitely a good option.

Before you read any further in this review of the Samsung Galaxy Note, we need to point out that this is a MASSIVE phone. With a 5.3 inch display, it’s not likely to fit into your pocket easily. When you think that some tablets only have a 7″ screen, you can tell that the Galaxy Note deserves its tag of being “half phone half tablet”. The upside, of course, is that the display is stunning to look at. whether you’re watching movies, playing games or just surfing the net everything looks better on the larger screen.

So the first thing you need to decide is whether or not the large size is a problem for you. If the size is unmanageable for your lifestyle then the Samsung Galaxy SII is probably a better option. If you can get past the inherent problems with a large size, however, then you can start to see some of the incredible benefits you get from a phone with a large screen.

Let’s talk specs. The screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note is a 5.3inch monster with a 1280×800 resolution, HD and super AMOLED. In short, the screen is absolutely beautiful when looking at images or watching videos. If you use your phone for a lot of media viewing then there’s little doubt that the Samsung Galaxy Note is the best choice at the moment. Images are sharp, crisp and have a rich colour. Not only that, but everything loads quickly and with little lag.

To balance the phone’s large screen size, the Samsung Galaxy Note is designed to be slim and light. We dread to think what the phone would have been like had this not been the case! As it is, the phone is just about holdable in a single hand (depending on the size of your hand), although it’s not going to be possible to hold the phone and text at the same time with only one hand.

The operating system on the Samsung Galaxy Note 12 month contract model is Google Android Gingerbread combined with Samsung TouchWiz interface. The TouchWiz interface is well designed and helps make the phone more accessible and intuitive.

The Samsung Galaxy Note also comes with a stylus, which isn’t something you’d expect from a smartphone. Most of the time a stylus is just an unnecessary annoyance, but in this case it makes some tasks a lot easier on the large display – especially image manipulation. If you want to use your phone for taking notes, then this is also much easier with the stylus as it is far more accurate than a finger (and you could then convert it into text by using a program such as Evernote). Some people say that the additional stylus proves that the Samsung Galaxy Note is actually a tablet masquerading as a phone, but in our opinion it is just an extra option that you don’t HAVE to use, but it’s certainly nice to have.

You might be wondering how the battery holds up with such a large screen. Fortunately, as the phone is so large it allows you to put in a bigger battery with the one that comes with the device. this means that the Samsung Galaxy Note on a 12 month deal will easily make it through 24 hours without needing to be recharged. Depending on how you use the phone, the additional battery (which has to be bought separately as far as we know) allows the phone to run considerably longer than a day. With the power sapping screen this is quite impressive and eases one of the main worries we had with the phone when we first saw it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 12 Month Contract Good Points

The screen is the main selling point of the Samsung Galaxy Note, and we think it works very well. Once you’ve used the phone for a while it starts to feel normal, and going back to a much smaller screen (such as the iPhone 4S) actually feels strange. Some people may find it too bulky to deal with, but we think Samsung has done a fantastic job of making a large screened device without it being ridiculously oversized.
The construction of the device is also first class (as you’d expect from Samsung). It feels solid in the hand and looks stylish. You might get a few odd looks when people see the size of the phone, but they certainly won’t be laughing at the design.
The stylus is a surprisingly welcome addition to what would have been a great phone without it. With the stylus, what is an oversized phone (albeit a very well designed and attractive one) becomes so much more and takes it into the realms of a tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note Bad Points

There are a few minor niggles with the Samsung Galaxy Note that don’t detract too much from the beauty of the phone. These include that there is no physical button to operate the camera (which a lot of people like) and that the back button is sometimes not the correct sensitivity. Whether or not the size is a bad point depends on your own preferences.

One thing to consider is whether you really NEED the Samsung Galaxy Note 12 month deals if you already have a tablet such as the iPhone 4S. This is an interesting question, but depends mainly on whether you carry your tablet around with you. If you don’t, and you enjoy watching films and TV on your phone, then the Galaxy Note could still be a good option.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Note is a fantastic phone that is definitely worth considering if you play a lot of media on your handset.
